Collect All Your Event Data And Store It Forever

As the volume of data continues to grow, efficiently managing, analyzing, and storing it is becoming an ever-increasing challenge. The rising demand for effective data management solutions across industries fuels the need for efficient observability solutions. Today, we sit down with Kendall Miller, Chief Extravert at Axiom, to dive deep into how Axiom is revolutionizing the observability landscape.

Watch the full interview here.

Kendall, Axiom operates in a very competitive space—observability. Could you elaborate on what makes Axiom’s approach unique and sets it apart from the rest?

Axiom is not just another platform in the observability space. We’ve redefined efficiency, making a generational leap in how we handle data. If Splunk were to be created today, it would resemble Axiom. However, we’ve taken a different path, building our own data store from the ground up. This fundamental difference makes us more cost-effective and powerful in managing logs, traces, and event data.

So you’ve essentially reimagined the whole structure of how observability works. What’s one of the key innovations that makes Axiom more efficient?

A big part of our innovation comes from how we handle data storage and querying. We built our own ingest pipeline and avoided technologies like Kafka because we believed we could do it better—and we did. One key difference is that we built everything with object storage in mind. By doing this, we’re able to pass on huge savings to our customers. This efficiency eliminates the need for data sampling, allowing companies to keep all of their event data for as long as they need, without the massive costs. And with AI on the rise, keeping all of this data will be even more crucial.

You touched on something exciting—keeping data “forever.” How does Axiom enable companies to store data long-term, and why is that so important?

While ‘forever’ might be an exaggeration, for many industries, including healthcare and finance, storing data for several years is a necessity. Thanks to modern cloud technologies like Amazon’s S3 buckets, the cost of storage has significantly decreased. Axiom is one of the few observability platforms designed to leverage these cost-effective storage solutions. Our platform uses proprietary compression technology, making it affordable to store massive amounts of data for years, a crucial requirement for industries where long-term data retention is mandatory for compliance.

Kendall Miller talks about the Axiom’s observability platform, which can retain event data indefinitely.

Speaking of compliance, especially with sensitive data, how does Axiom handle security and ensure companies can store and access their data while adhering to strict regulations?

We offer three models to accommodate different security and compliance needs. First, there’s the traditional SaaS model where we handle everything in our infrastructure. Second, we offer a “bring your own bucket” model where companies can use their own S3 storage, and we simply query the data while it stays in their environment. Finally, there’s our hybrid model, which I think is particularly appealing to highly regulated industries like finance and healthcare. In this model, the compute and data live entirely in the company’s own infrastructure, but we manage the control plane. This setup allows companies to comply with strict data regulations without losing the advantages of SaaS, like automatic updates and simplified management.

Do you have an example of how one of your customers has leveraged Axiom to improve their operations?

A great example is how e-commerce companies use Axiom to analyze event data. We’ve had customers who could pinpoint that a feature they introduced years ago directly impacted their revenue. By retaining and analyzing their data, they found insights that led them to reintroduce or double down on features that boosted sales. In other cases, companies have used event data to track security incidents going back several years. With Axiom, they were able to see exactly when and how a breach occurred, which is critical in preventing future incidents.

Let’s shift gears to AI. Every tech company seems to be integrating AI into their solutions. How is Axiom leveraging AI, and how does it benefit your customers?

We’re not an AI company, but we enable companies to maximize their AI initiatives. The problem most companies face is not that they don’t have enough data because they can’t afford to keep it long enough to feed AI models effectively. Event data is particularly valuable because it captures everything from user behaviour to infrastructure performance. Axiom allows companies to store this data affordably and access it later when ready to apply AI. By retaining years of event data, businesses can draw meaningful insights that impact their bottom line—understanding customer behaviour, improving infrastructure, or optimizing operations.

As we wrap up, what are the key benefits of using Axiom’s platform for businesses?

The key benefits of Axiom come down to three main things:

Cost-efficiency – We allow companies to store and query massive amounts of data affordably without sacrificing performance.

Scalability—Axiom is designed to handle today’s data challenges while being flexible enough to adapt to future needs, including AI-driven insights.

Compliance and Security – Whether using our SaaS or hybrid approach, Axiom enables companies to store sensitive data while meeting compliance requirements.

By building a system that doesn’t rely on legacy technology, we’re positioned to lead the next generation of observability solutions.

Thank you, Kendall. It’s clear Axiom is not just keeping up with industry trends but actively shaping the future of observability.
